Instructional Design and Development Expert Lee Karns to Highlight ToolBook 2004 in eLearning Guild Forum on Software Simulations

SumTotal Systems, the largest provider of learning and business performance technologies, services and processes, today announced that instructional design and development expert Lee Karns will highlight SumTotal’s ToolBook 2004 content and simulation authoring solution in an online session entitled, “Designing Performance-Based Software Simulations for Maximum Impact” held today, February 24 at 12. p.m. PST. The session is part of the eLearning Guild’s Online Forum on Effective Use of Simulations to Enhance e-Learning, which runs from 8:30 a.m. PST to 2:15 p.m. today.

Karns, founder of Vertical View Software Associates, and an expert in design, development, and deployment of learning solutions for the corporate and education market, will discuss how to conceptualize and build the most effective performance-based software application simulations. These interactive simulations train users with guidance and measurable proficiency in an environment that closely approximates target software applications. In his session, Karns will use ToolBook 2004 to demonstrate effective simulation planning, design and production for the highest impact on user proficiency and success.

“Many organizations have a critical need to train people in the use of enterprise software systems, driven by the roll-out of new ERP applications across the organization,” said Karns. “As companies migrate instructor-led training to e-learning, software application simulations have emerged as an effective strategy for accomplishing this mission-critical learning. Interacting with simulations is a much more effective learning experience with a much more successful outcome than simply watching a demonstration/screen-play of a software application.”

ToolBook helps organizations create the compelling content and simulations that are a critical success factor in any organizational learning initiative. Using its powerful features, companies can create professional, standards-based simulations, tutorials, courseware and other interactive learning content without in-depth programming skills. Based on AICC and SCORM standards, ToolBook also makes it easy to launch and track ToolBook content through a standards-compliant learning management system (LMS).

“ToolBook allows for quick and very powerful development of simulations that accurately match the true fidelity of the target software application,” said Karns. “ToolBook also expedites the authoring process because it enables authors to configure it to automate many tasks. In particular, its flexibility in interfacing with learning management systems and external data sources is one of the solution’s key strengths for instructional designers and learning managers.”

Karns will show finished performance-based software simulations created with ToolBook during today’s seminar. Attendees will also earn the foundational elements of how the simulations were constructed and why management and process are important to the success of delivering simulations and other learning applications on time and on budget.
